 Treaty Event 2017: Promoting Multilateral Treaties that Safeguard Humanity (19 - 22 September 2017, United Nations Headquarters)

This year’s Treaty Event which will be held from 19 to 22 September 2017 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, in conjunction with the general debate of the seventy-second session of the General Assembly.

The Treaty Event will highlight treaties deposited with the Secretary-General that cover areas of global concern, including human rights, refugees and stateless persons, health, trade, transport, terrorism and criminal matters, law of the sea, outer space, disarmament, climate change and other environmental issues . The Treaty Event may be used to sign and ratify or accede to any treaty for which the Secretary-General acts as depositary.

 Headquarters Seminar on Treaty Law and Practice (Treaty Section, OLA)

The Treaty Section of the Office of Legal Affairs is organizing a Seminar on Treaty Law and Practice: The Work of the Treaty Section of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs (in English) for delegates of Permanent Missions, at the Headquarters, on Thursday 22 June 2017 from 10AM to 6PM in the Conference Room of the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DC2 Building, 4th Floor, Room number: DC2-0461).

ENTRY INTO FORCE: 16 August 2017. On 18 May 2017, the conditions for the entry into force of the above-mentioned Convention were met. Accordingly, the Convention shall enter into force on 16 August 2017, in accordance with its article 31 (1) which reads as follows: “This Convention shall enter into force on the ninetieth day after the date of deposit of the fiftieth instrument of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession.”
