Regional Training

ECOWAS Regional Training WorkshopThe Treaty Section delivers regional, and occasionally national, training seminars on treaty law and practice upon invitation by Member States. In addition to addressing the depositary practice of the Secretary-General and the registration and publication of treaties in accordance with article 102 of the Charter of the United Nations, these seminars often include specialized sessions on specific conventions deposited with the Secretary General, delivered by the substantive offices dealing with these conventions.

Topics covered include:

  • Introduction to the work of the Treaty Section and the law of treaties;
  • Final clauses to multilateral treaties (participation, entry into force, reservations, amendments, etc.);
  • Practice of the Secretary-General as depositary of multilateral treaties and conditions for the deposit of instruments;
  • Requisites for registration and publication of treaties, under Article 102 of the Charter;
  • Resources of the United Nations Treaty Collection website.

Organized in cooperation with the hosting Government, these training seminars are mainly intended for officials of the ministries of foreign affairs and other ministries, members of the judicial and legislative branches of government, and other interested parties, dealing with treaty law issues as part of their work. The seminars are usually open to participants of a certain region or sub-region, and may be conducted in English, French or Spanish.

Invitations to the regional and national seminars are usually sent by the hosting Government. Information is also provided on this website.
