1An instrument of acceptance of the Protocol was deposited on 2 December 1975 with the Secretary-General by the Government of the German Democratic Republic with a declaration. For the text of the declaration, see United Nations, Treaty Series , vol. 987, p. 410. A "notification of reapplication" of the Agreement of 4 May 1910 on behalf of the German Democratic Republic had been deposited with the Secretary-General on 4 October 1974. See also note 2 under “Germany” in the “Historical Information” section in the front matter of this volume. 2The Secretary-General, received on 6 and 10 June 1997 communications regarding the status of Hong Kong from China and the United Kingdom of Great Brtiain and Northern Ireland with regard to the Agreement (chapter VIII-6) and Protocol (chapter VIII-4)(see also note 2 under “China” and note 2 under “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland” in the “Historical Information” section in the front matter of this volume).  Upon resuming the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong, China notified the Secretary-General that the Agreement and the Protocol will also apply to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
On 17 December 2002, the Government of China informed the Secretary-General of the following:
“On 1 July 2002, the Government of the HKSAR merged its Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau and the Commerce and Industry Bureau into the Commerce Industry and Technology Bureau. Accordingly, the Commerce, Industry and Technology Bureau becomes the authority of the HKSAR charged with the duty provided for in Article 1 of the Agreement.”
