The Conference was convened pursuant to General Assembly resolution 369 (IV)
of 3 December 1949 and met at Lake Success, New York, from 15 March to 6 April 1950. For the text of the Final Act of the Conference, see United Nations,

In accordance with article 17 (1), the Convention was to cease to have effect on 23 January 1957. However, the Convention was extended as a result of the adoption of the Protocols of 16 January 1957 and 15 January 1967, and remained in force until 24 January 1972 (see chapters XV.2 and XV.3).
