Treaty Events
Annual Treaty Event Publications
Every year the Secretary-General of the United Nations invites Heads of
States and Governments to participate in the treaty signature/ratification
ceremony organized by the Treaty Section with a view to encourage wider
participation in the multilateral treaties deposited with him (over 500
treaties) and their speedier entry into force. Such Events coincide with
the opening of the General Assembly session in September and take place in
a specially designated area. Each year the Secretary-General identifies a
core group of treaties to become the focus of a Treaty Event for that year.
Treaties are highlighted to emphasize the particular challenges facing
humanity today and to seek active engagement of Member States in their
resolution within the international legal framework.
Annual Treaty Events also serve as advocacy tool by the UN in its effort to
raise awareness and appreciation of international law among the general
public.
